Birds of Vermont photos and articles by Bernie Paquette and Maeve Kim. Images of birds in
the backyard and beyond. Come along with us as we travel Vermont forest lands,
parks, woods, bogs, refuges, wildlife management and other bird friendly
natural areas in search of VT birds. When birds behave around you as if you do
not exist, a greater depth of birding will offer itself. Guest bird postings
welcome.
"Vermont Birds and
Words" is meant to be, in part, a field guide - though not in the sense of
a bird or scientific nature guide. Our intent is to provide a guide to Vermont
parks, fields, woodlands and other natural areas that are open to the public,
relatively easy to access, highlighting some examples of the beauty, awe, and
diversity of soul enriching treasures Vermont nature offers all of us - if we
just stop, look, and listen; in short, if we observe nature. Our natural world offers spiritual refreshment!
Observing nature's details with patient and close focus opens before unseen worlds to the casual viewer as well as the citizen scientist. We (the authors) will by our own personal interest, focus considerable attention to birds; however, all of nature is open to our observations.

Photos of trails we explore
will serve as a snapshot of what you might encounter including some of the
birds we view along our walks. However go beyond our sampling and walk into your natural areas to see and experience for yourself - allow nature to nourish and astound you.

One bitter man, One lonely woman, One lost little bird. Ivy isn't thrilled when a surly newcomer shows up for the monthly bird walk. He says almost nothing and smiles even less- but he's there again for the next walk, and the next. He is part of the group through eagles and owls and diving ducks and the return of spring warblers. He is there through emotional upheaval and near-tragedy. Then a very rare little bird comes to Vermont and affects human lives in unexpected ways.
Maeve Kim is a Vermont birder, teacher, musician and writer. Her first book received critical acclaim and was a popular choice for book groups. This is her second novel.

There are a lot of things to
see, unwrapped gifts and free surprises. The world is fairly studded and strewn
with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. …….. if you crouch motionless
on a bank to watch a tremulous ripple thrill on the water and are rewarded by
the sight of a muskrat kit paddling from its den, will you count that sight a
chip of copper only, and go your rueful way? It is dire poverty indeed, when a
man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won’t stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and
simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since
the world is in fact planted in pennies, you have with your poverty bought a
lifetime of days.
