The day was overcast and quiet, colors and sounds muted.
I was completely and comfortably alone, soaking up the October warmth as I
munched my tuna sandwich.
Rhythmic tapping in the background slowly penetrated my autumn
haze. In a nearby tree was a female Pileated Woodpecker. She was not drumming
or excavating (wrong time of year for both of these). She was working to get
grubs, using her bill as shovel and lever and wedge and jackhammer.
She didn’t
even notice me when I stood up and walked closer.
Something magical and dream-like about the quiet, the solitude, the large magnificent bird and me having lunch together.
